Recommendations on how to make your child more active
While the data is worrying, and the current system seems to be almost set up so that teens fail physically (even if they do well in school), there are several innovative ways for teens to get active again. How much? Well, the CDC recommend at least 60 minutes of activity per day for teens, but currently only one in 10 (!) Teens does this (7).
1. Accept, even reluctantly, the current schedule ... and
sleep longer!
While some forward-thinking school districts have delayed
starting school for teenagers, most have not budged. In this case, teens just
need to change their schedule to try to get at least eight hours of sleep a
night. For a teenager who is unable to sleep, this could mean going to bed at
10:00 pm. during the school week.
2. Create more natural activities on the school day.
Use a fitness monitor to see how much you move each day,
then try to increase the number of steps you take each day. Take a walk around
the neighborhood when you get back from school and the sun is still shining.
Make more effort to walk around school. Climb up and down the stairs often. He
does not always sit, as in the library, but occasionally gets up while studying
or reading.
These are just a few exercises to helps you move more
throughout the day.
3. Make your home a mores active place
Many teenagers do not help around the house. Instead, help
in the kitchen, wash the dishes, work 15 minutes in the yard, get up while
studying, do some BurstFit workouts at home or a short HIIT workout, etc.
4. Stop letting your smartphone take up lengths of time.
One of the main causes of sleeps deprivation and less
effective study of adolescents is a phenomenon that affects most age groups,
but which adolescents are leading the way: smartphone addiction, also known as
nomophobia. In my article on smartphone addiction, I recommend five steps that
I highly recommend you take to end this destructive addiction. I'm not saying
that you need to get rid of your smartphone, but it should play a much smaller
role in your teen's life.
5. Stick to your diet better.
Again, lack of energy is the main reason adolescents move
little, because while busy schedules and inadequate sleep partly explain this
epidemic, another variable is over-dependence on processed foods, sodas and
grains. With minimal consumption of organic vegetables, free-range meats and no
antibiotics, probiotic foods, and the like. Your teen and parents need to think
carefully about avoiding eating malnourished meals and bringing healthy school
meals to school, and possibly avoiding gluten or grains altogether.
6. Remove the eating disorder.
Finally, adolescents, especially girls, can die from an
eating disorder such as bulimia nervosa as a result of dangerous and reckless
attempts to lose weight or as a result of intense anxiety. There are two
warning signs to watch out for, but there are also several natural ways to deal
with this disorder ... and cure it.
